ABSTRACT

Silicon is the second most abundant element in nature behind oxygen. Although there is no RDA for silicon yet, the importance of dietary soluble silicon (as orthosilicic acid (OSA)) to human health is becoming more apparent with the emergence of recent new research. In this presentation, the potential health benefits of OSA in Spritzer Natural Mineral Water to reduce the body burden of aluminium, a neurotoxin will be discussed. Other benefits of OSA to collage-nous tissues such as bone, skin, hair and blood vessels will also be highlighted.

About the Presenter

Dr. Chuah is the Executive Director of Spritzer Bhd, a company listed on Bursa Malaysia. He obtained his PhD in Applied Organic Chemistry from the University of Otago, New Zealand in 1979. He worked as a teaching assistant in Polymer Laboratory, State University of New York (SUNY), Syracuse, New York from 1980 to 1982 and as a Research Associate at University of Malaya in 1982. From 1983 to June 1997, he worked for Yee Lee Corporation Bhd in various capacities as Chief Chemist, Research and Development Manager and later as General Manager of Research and Development. He joined Spritzer in July 1997. He was a member of the Committee set up by the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) to produce a draft on Malaysian Standards Specification on Natural Mineral Water. Presently, he is the Chairman of the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers Bottled Water Group and also the Chairman of the Environmental and Technical Committee of the Asia Middle East Bottled Water Association (ABWA). He is also a Director of Hovid Berhad.
