ABSTRACT

The current pharmaceutical drug discovery and development process is facing increasing challenges in the form of increasing costs to reach a New Drug Application (NDA) stage, which has been estimated to exceed 1 billion USD by the time a new drug reaches the market. The talk will outline and critically review the current drug discovery and development process based on synthetic compound libraries generated through combinatorial chemistry. Furthermore, the potential of natural products found in biodiverse environments as lead structures for novel therapeutic approaches to combat major diseases will be discussed. Particular emphasis will be on the opportunities within oncology.
