The World Pharmacists Day is held every year to create awareness among the general public on the rational use of medication and the role that pharmacists play in community service. In conjunction with this year’s theme “Caring for you”, Quest International University Perak (QIUP) celebrated this occasion at the Old Folk’s Home at Kampung Simee, Ipoh, Perak. This place was specifically chosen because these geriatric patients require intensive supervision and care when it comes to consuming their medication as it is directly related to their quality of life.
The QIUP Pharmacy Students Society organised a donation drive among fellow students to buy essential items for the Old Folk’s Home. Motivated by their important role in the community, the students collected a significant amount, from which some amount was used to purchase the essential items and the remaining amount was donated to the Old Folk’s Home. The donation drive would have been impossible without the enthusiasm shown by the passionate students and staff of QIUP. They contributed generously as a noble initiative of the QIUP Pharmacy Students Society.
The event at the Old Folk’s Home started with the welcoming speech of Mr. Vincent Lee, the Chief Operating Officer of the Old Folk’s Home. Mr. Lean Yen Loong, Senior Lecturer and Pharmacist, Faculty of Pharmacy explained the role of pharmacists as care-givers in the community . After the simple formality, students and staff who are also pharmacists discussed with the residents on the medication they are taking. The students also measured the blood pressure and blood glucose of the residents. The programme ended with a memorable and meaningful morning tea session with the administrators of the home.
