Let’s Chat! #11

Commander Ian Anderson,

Ipoh & Kinta Valley “Lost Heritage”

There is a lot to be done to preserve Ipoh’s heritage – and that was the central point of prominent Ipoh historian Commander Ian Anderson’s talk. Heritage, he defined, is anything that existed before us. For Ipoh, heritage is its distinct culture, people, languages, limestone hills, pre-war buildings, cave drawings, (the last remaining) tin dredge and more. These, he stresses, speak to who we are and where we come from. Alas, this city that tin built is quickly losing its heritage to unbridled and irresponsible development. Instead of merely pointing our fingers at the powers that be, he pointed out that every one of us are responsible to preserve what is left of our heritage. .
