Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is defined as corporations giving back to the community who patronizes them and/or buys their goods. Volunteerism is a key part of CSR providing the manpower to execute the acts of philanthropy.
As final year Corporate Communication students, we will be undertaking a series of charitable activities involving Anning Soup Kitchen which was set up about five year ago. They provide free lunch seven days a week which is served from 11am to 2pm daily and caters for those above 60 years who are poor. Anning Soup Kitchen also serves food for the disabled and those who are unmarried. In total, about 90 to 100 people are served daily.
Our class so far has helped serve food and clean the living quarters. For future visits, we hope to paint the facilities and do other small renovations. We are currently attempting to raise money for furniture for the live-in residents.
CSR has taught us that the careers we hope to embark on after obtaining our degrees also include helping the community as this is very positive publicity for a company. As several of us hope to start our own businesses, this is good training indeed.
