As a top-quality educational institution, Quest International University continuously holds activities that benefit the community by spreading knowledge beyond the confines of our campus.
In line with this effort, QIU Faculty of Medicine Associate Professor and Head of Department of Psychiatry Prof. Dr Bilbir Kaur became the latest QIU lecturer to deliver a public educational talk on her field of speciality.
Dr Bilbir gave a talk on Major Depressive Disorder to the staff of Cameron Highlands’ Hospital Sultanah Hajjah Kalsom and the local health clinic (Klinik Kesihatan).
The talk covered the magnitude of the disorder – which is the leading cause of
disability according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
According to local figures, about 29% of the population suffer from depression and anxiety disorder. By 2020, depression will be a major mental health illness among Malaysians.
In her address, Dr Bilbir explained how to go about recognising depressive symptoms in an individual and how to help them. The emphasis was placed on treatment with antidepressants, and psychotherapy – especially Cognitive Behaviour therapy.
Before this, Dr Bilbir has given many talks before in Hospital Sultanah Hajjah Kalsom as a visiting consultant psychiatrist, as well as to the Orang Asli community in Kampong Sg Ruil. We are extremely proud of her efforts, and here’s hoping that more fascinating talks are in the pipeline.
